In the Hollywood Casino 400, he earned his first career start in October 2011 in the Sprint Cup Series at Kansas Speedway. Richard Childress announced in November 2011 that Dillon would move to the Nationwide Series in 2012.

Austin competed on a limited basis in the Spring Cup Series starting at Michigan International Speedway in the year. In June 2012, he won his first Nationwide Series at Kentucky Speedway.

In 2013, Austin continued to drive full-time in the Nationwide Series. In November 2013, he won the NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship. He finished 12 places in the season’s final at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November 2013.

On July 19, 2020, he claimed his 3rd career victory at the 2020 O’Reilly Auto Parts 500. He started the season with a victory in his Duel for the Daytona 500 in 2021. He returned to RCR for his ninth season in the Cup Series, where he drove the No. 3 Car in 2022. On March 27, he finished 10th in the Circuit of America’s race.

Austin Dillon also joined RWR-Eurasia Motorsport for his 24 Hours of Daytona debut in 2021, sharing an LMP2 car with Cody Ware and Salih Yoluç.

RCR announced on October 28, 2022, that Keith Rodden would be on the pit box for Dillon starting in 2023. Justin Alexander announced shortly before this announcement that he would be stepping down from the chief crew role on the No. 3 car.
