From 1934 to 1976, Roberts served as Chairman of the Master’s Tournament. He was named “Chairman in Memoriam” after his death. His friendship with President Dwight Eisenhower led to the Eisenhowers making Augusta National their retreat during the 1950s.

Sometimes Roberts was described as a “benevolent dictator” and during his tenure, he did not hesitate to take swift, stern action against anyone whose words or deeds he believed could tarnish the club’s image, no matter how slight.

An example of this occurred at the end of the Monday playoff in 1966 when CBS commentator Jack Whitaker referred to the energetic crowd on the 18th fairway following the three players as a “mob” – Whitaker was subsequently banned by Roberts until 1972.

Clifford Roberts stepped down as a chairman when Augusta National admitted an African American member, Ron Townsend. In 2012, the first woman, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, was admitted.

Clifford received many awards and honors during his lifetime, including service on the PGA Advisory Committee from its inception in 1943 until his death.
