John Romita Sr. entered the comic industry in 1949. Initially, he was entered in the series Famous Funnies. “Steven Douglas up there was a benefactor to all young artists,” Romita recalled. “The first story he gave me was a love story.
All the women looked like emaciated men, and he bought it, never criticized me, and told me to keep working. He paid me two hundred dollars and never published it — rightfully so”.
In 1949, John worked at the New York City company Forbes Lithograph. At the time, he earned $30 a week, when comic-book inker Lester Zakarin. His friend from high school, whom he ran into on a subway train, offered him either $17 or $20.

John Romita was very popular when he ran on Iron Man with writer David Michelinie and artist Bob Layton which began in 1978. The team introduced several supporting characters, including Tony Stark’s bodyguard girlfriend, Bethany Cabe, and rival industrialist Justin Hammer.
He had his first regular run on the series in the early 1980s, The Amazing Spider-Man, and he was the artist for the launch of the Dazzler series. He and writer Dennis O’Neil introduced Madame Web in The Amazing Spider-Man #210 (Nov. 1980) and Hydro-Man in issue #212 (Jan. 1981).
A page to pencil a 10-page story for him as an uncredited ghost artist. “I thought, this is ridiculous! In two pages, I can make more money than I usually make all week! So I ghosted it and then kept ghosting for him”. Then Romita recalled, “I think it was a 1920s mobster crime story”.
