Milburn Stone was born on July 5th, 1904, in Burrton, Kansas, USA, to Herbert Stone and the former Laura Belfield Stone. He has one sibling named Charles Joseph Stone.

Milburn Stone attended high school at Burrton. He graduated from Burrton High School, where he was active in the drama club, played basketball, and sang in a barbershop quartet.

He was interested in acting from an early age. He wanted to become a professional actor. Stone’s uncle, Fred Stone, was a versatile actor who performed on Broadway and in circuses, according to Joe Stone, his nephew.

Stone declined his congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy and instead joined a stock theatre company led by Helen Ross.
