In 1972, Williams received a scholarship to attend Oakwood Friends School, a Quaker school in Poughkeepsie, New York. In high school, he was interested in journalism; he became the editor of the school paper. During his time at Oakwood, he served as the “student clerk” for his senior year, acted as the editor of the school newspaper, and participated in sports.
He graduated from Oakwood in 1972 and then went on to attend Haverford College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1976.
